Ideas and Concepts


In the beginning of my project we had a long and broad phase for brainstorming. The scope of the project was very broad so we had to explore the ways we could go. In contrast to my previous semester where the scope of the project was already very clear in the beginning (Wild Robots)


We explored different brainstorm techniques and we tried to keep it as structured as possible. We used a 100-10-1 method, where we first generated 100 ideas then filtered out 10 good ideas and finally end up with 1 best idea. This idea would be conceptualized and shaped into a good final concept.


We went into the city to gather direct impression of all information systems and objects there are in the city.

To get 100 ideas we brainstormed about the digital world and the analog world. As a kind of imposing brainstorm technique we combined a word from both brainstorms and looked which ideas came up with the combination.

In the end I filtered five ideas out those brainstorms and transformed them in early-concepts. I looked what kind possibilities there were within these concepts and compared the ideas to make the right decision where to go further.

Finally when I had a final concept I continued broadening my scope and narrowing down again. I made lots of design decision before I ended up with Colonies

Sketching assignment

With the assignment exploratory sketching, I made improvement in exploring through sketching. I could and will use the techniques learned in this assignment to explore some of my future designs and concepts through sketching them and iterating on them.


Within the competency of ideas and concepts I learned a lot. The 100-10-1 appracoh was for me a good exercise because in all my previous projects I already had a certain idea of a starting point. In this project I hadn’t this starting point.

Moreover, the concepualzing process of widening and narrowing down was also a good exercise for me. I explored really a lot and this process within the project helped me to strengthen my vision in the context of thinking about the opportunities of tomorrow.

To concretely explore forms and concepts, the exploratory sketching assignment made me feel more comfortable with the pencil. There is still lots of exercise to do, but I’m happy I’m now able to ideate in an extra way.

Integrated Technology


In my previous projects I made lots of progress within this competency while doing the “creative technology” assignment, programming with arduinos in for example my Protei Boat, and using processing last year.

I decided to not fully focus on progress within Integrated Technology this semester, however I did make progress in this competency. I programmed a game simulation and I made an attempt with augmented reality, object recognition and recognitions of many tags within the view of a webcam, and processing these data through a web-service system.

AR tags recognition

Within my project, Colonies, I had to create a system that should recognize certain objects on the game map. Therefore I created a system that recognizes AR tags (a kind of QR-codes), above these tags were 2d objects projected that should have recognized colors in their areas. However I did not manage to create the color recognition software. I attempted to focus other aspects of my final prototype, because the color recognition part would not be really learnfull for me but very time demanding.

Object recognition

In my ideation phase I wanted to do something with object recognition. I explored the possibilities using rgb-depth databases and object recognition software from Intel. However, if I continued going this way, the project focus would have a been mainly on this competency, and that was not the intention of my PDP. So I decided not to continue with this advanced software and database project.

Augmented reality

While going in the direction of the Colonies game I explored the possibilities for Augmented Reality. With augmented reality the whole game could come to life. For example when you move around the game with a tablet, you could see a living village where several computer-animated people are busy with their work and tasks in the village. This would give the feeling that the players are a kind of master or god in the game, looking down on the villages they control.

Augmented reality would supply this feature in the game. I tried to reach some level of augmented reality using the following tutorial.

In the end I only used the AR tags technique as described before. However I learned to process augmented reality using a webcam.

Game Simulation

As described in the project description I had to build a fully function game simulation based on the actual gameplay on in real life. As the webcam connection didn’t work yet. I made a possibility to simulate the villages and buildings in the interface it self.

The calculating of the resources based on the villages and buildings is fully working as well as the turnconditions Array of turnConditions. You can read more about this in my project report.

With this process of making the game simulation I discovered a new part of programming with javascript. It was object-orientated programming work and very different of building a website. With this experience I’m more capable of programming and discovering new things.

Social Culture Awareness


Within my project I did research after kids and their computer and gaming behavior. As a result of my research I became aware of specific age groups and their behavior when gaming.

Also the awareness of how the society changed to the digital world and thinking about these cultural changes helped me to grow within Social Culture Awareness.


In April 2013 I went to Milan. Using the awareness about trends gain in the assignment “Trends Cockpit” in B21 I had an eye out to spot and experience the big trends.

Regarding to my vision I want to become aware of the opportunities and chances of society. Therefore, social culture awareness is important. I feel that I have grown mainly within the project when thinking about this society and how I want it to change it with my design.

User Focus Perspective


The growth in UFP within my project isn’t very big. I wanted to do a bigger user test but I wasn’t able to do this considering my design decision when making the prototypes. I decided to invest in the prototypes and not in UFP for my project. However, during the exhibition I did a small user test as described in my project and project report. This was a good insight for me how people react on something I had designed.

Designing for the here and now

Within this assignment the user was the center. With this assignment I went through an essential thinking about the user. When thinking about interaction with a product or service now, I think different. I think about why the designer had made such decision and if this was a good decision considering the experience and interaction. This assignment has changed my way of thinking. There is still space for more improvement of how to perceive products and services.

Form and Senses


Within my project I made several steps of growth within forms and senses. One of my goals was to improve this competency. I made several design decisions within the process of my project to make space to work with this competency. I developed myself with, sketching my ideas, ideating the ideas with simple sketches, sketch the buildings and the game, working it out in illustrator and solidworks, lasercutting, and iterating this process.

This processes helped me grow in my senses of form, materials and communicating my design. When asked visitors of my exhibition about their perception and opinion of my buildings they often understood what the purpose of the building was. They also liked the design and some people asked if they could take some small buildings. I took that as a compliment for my design.

Design and Research Processes


The design process within my project this semester went quite structured. I used the 100-10-1 method, to first generate 100 ideas, then work out 10 ideas and in the end conceptualize 1 idea. Within this process I compared many ideas with each other to make the right decisions in my design process. While making this decisions within the last step (from 10 to 1 idea) I based some decisions on research I had done about gaming behavior of children.

When working out my concept I also made structured decisions considering the technique, form and interaction.

Teamwork and Communication


Within the project we ideate as a group but worked out our own concepts. The need to work individually within the project, was already clear from the beginning of the semester. However we complemented each other within the brainstorm and ideation phase and gave each other feedback while working out our concepts. The small collaboration went pretty well and I am happy with how this went. Lars and me had shared things and code about augmented reality. Max and Kim gave me feedback about the forms and designs of my game. I also gave feedback to my project-colleagues often.


I worked in groups within the assignments “Designing for the here and now” (DG630) and “Financial aspects of innovative projects”. In each of these assignment the collaboration went well. We complemented each other within the assignments. In the assignments we weekly divided tasks and assisted each other where needed. The teamwork went excellent.

Business Process Design

Financial Aspects of Innovative projects (DG505)

Within this competency I did an assignment to become more aware of financials and start-ups.

The assignment “Financial aspects of innovative projects“ helped me grow into the compentency Business Process Design by creating awareness about the fully scope of business models, their financial aspects, money flows, and earnings models. This assignment also discussed a part of “setting up new businesses”.

While doing the exercises for this project, all the groups worked with different categories of products and services. In this way we experienced a big scope of business models.


For my own business WanBuyOne, I compared different earning models and tested the value of attraction while asking artists about their opinion of the different models.


Within the project I took business aspects into account while making design decisions. I did not make any specific business model. Moreover, I’m a business minded person and all my concepts are indirectly tested in my mind if they are applicable for business.

Self Directed Learning


Considering my C-verdict on reflecting I made several questions for myself what to ask when writing reflections, this helped for me when reflecting within this showcase.

However, I still lean to write lots about what I’ve done and not what I really learned. I mark that this is changing but still is not at my level that I want. What I do see is an improvement in writing reflections and thinking about the essence what I’ve done.

Exploratory sketching

The assignment assisted me in developing my own style. It helped me experiment with what kind of design I like and what kind of directions in concepts I like to go.

Descriptive Mathematical Modeling

Game economy

In this competency I made quite some developments, I modeled a whole game economy. This was quite a challenge, but I managed to develop this structurally. Generating this structure was a process for me that I learned. You have to start somewhere but also have to make a plan. Also the process selecting the techniques which I should use, was a process consisting of design decisions.

Financial aspects of innovative projects

With this assignment we had to model, money flows and financial structures. This process helped me to become better in getting an overview of more complex numeric structures.
